CE ECSC Announces 2014 Dates
CE-ECSC ANNOUNCES DATES FOR 52ND ANNUAL EVENT
(Virginia Beach, Va. – March 12, 2014) – The Virginia Beach Jaycees today confirmed the dates for this year’s 52nd annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships presented by Vans (CE-ECSC). This year’s event will be held as originally scheduled, Monday, August 18, 2014 through Sunday Aug. 24.
With the announcement, the Virginia Beach Jaycees, the producers of the event, reaffirmed their
commitment to host the annual beach sports and entertainment festival at the resort city’s oceanfront.
“Any concerns about certain operational expenses and cooperation with municipal departments have been addressed to our mutual satisfaction,” stated Charlie Pitts, a Virginia Beach Jaycee and chairman of the 52nd annual CE-ECSC. “I can assure all CE-ECSC competitors, sponsors and fans that all parties involved with bringing about the world’s second oldest surfing competition are committed to doing so again this August.”
“For over 50 years, ECSC has delighted our out-of-town visitors and local residents, and served as a valued partner with Virginia Beach tourism,” said James B. Ricketts, Director of the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The festival showcases the City’s rich beach culture and surfing heritage, and we are looking forward to welcoming the incredible athletes and musical talent this summer’s festival will bring.”
The Jaycees and the City of Virginia Beach are now in agreement over the amount of service fees CEECSC is responsible for this year. A city council resolution authorized city officials to charge the producers of oceanfront events for certain fees for services provided by various municipal departments that supply or support special events and festivals held in the resort area. An earlier city assessment did not take into account several fees CE-ECSC has historically paid in the past.
A multi-sport and entertainment festival, the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships presented by Vans is held each year in Virginia Beach, Va. Professional and amateur surfing is the core of the event and involves hundreds of surfers competing in 35 age and skill divisions. Other activities include skateboarding and BMX demonstrations, beach volleyball and flag football tournaments, a boardwalk 5K race, a beach fitness challenge and a charity golf tournament, among other activities. A “Vendor Village” features youth activities and product sampling from more than 40 vendors endemic of the surf, skate and extreme sports industries. Free musical entertainment from a beach stage feature regional and national acts, while food and refreshments are available for purchase. Go to 2013.surfecsc.com for a detailed calendar of events.
